It’s World Book Day today. Despite being avid readers, my kids have always hated it.
Don’t get me wrong – they LOVE books. But they hate anything that involves forced fancy dress. I can’t think why? It’s not like I constantly dressed them up as reindeer, pumpkins or the Grinch when they were small…
Anyway, I love books. And when it comes to copywriting or content marketing there are some cracking ones out there!
So in lieu of any World Book Day fancy dress shenanigans in my house, I thought I’d share my top ‘must read’ books with you.
Some of them are about copywriting, some about marketing, some about business in general and some about self-development too.
I’ve read a LOT of books but only the best have made the cut.
So have a read and let me know what you think? Or if you’ve got any ‘must reads’ then let me hear about them too – I’m always looking for the next book to read!
1: Profit First – Mike Michalowicz
A simple to follow process that helps you take control of your business (and personal) finances and turn your business from a money-guzzling monster into a cash-generating asset. This is one of those ‘I wish someone gave me this when I first started out’ types of books.
2: The Slight Edge – Jeff Olsen
Shows you how to use tiny actions and the power of compounding to achieve big things in your life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or you’re fed up with treading water then this book is for you.
3: The Ad Week Copywriting Handbook – Joseph Sugarman
Pretty much the Copywriting Bible. Good old Jo was writing ads before you and I were born. He’s the grand master when it comes to writing direct response ads. If you want to know how to make your marketing work then this is a must-read.
4: Launch – Jeff Walker
This book promises a system that allows you to sell almost anything online. And it doesn’t fail to deliver. If you’re in the start-up phase or still struggling to get off the ground then check out what my man Jeff has to say. I once crashed my website with too much traffic thanks to a launch I created using this formula!
5: Cashvertising – Drew Eric Whitman
Teaches you the fundamentals of selling and what motivates people to buy – something every business owner needs to know! It’s easy to read and full of essential advertising knowledge.
6: Never Split The Difference – Chris Voss
Written by an Ex-FBI negotiator this book teaches you the tricks of the trade! Negotiation is a core skill for any business owner (or parent!). This book is a new favourite of mine and will be incredibly helpful both in business and in life.
7: Living With A Seal – Jesse Itzler
One of my all-time favourites. Jesse will make you laugh out loud as he shares his experience of inviting a Navy Seal to come live with him and whip him into shape. It’s enjoyable, entertaining but packed full of mindset gold and life-changing nuggets too.
8: Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion – Dr Robert Cialdini
Learn the 6 main principles of persuasion and how to use them. This one is a fairly long read but filled with fascinating studies, insights and knowledge. In fact, I might read this one again soon…
9: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**K – Mark Manson
I’ll be honest. I didn’t think I’d like this one. But it’s not what it seems. Mark shares his story (and it’s a good one) while teaching you how to let go of your fears and reach your full potential – by not giving a f*ck. I’d highly recommend it.
10: Spark – John J Ratey MD
I see lots of business owners neglecting their health. But it’s a huge mistake. Ever wished you had more energy, could focus better or get more done in the day? Then this book is for you.
11: The Power of Purpose – Les Brown
I love Les. When it comes to motivation he’s my go-to man. If you’re in a slump or just looking to add a little positivity to your life then you’ll love this. He’s witty, clever and possibly one of the best speakers I’ve heard.
So check them out and let me know what you think? I’d love to hear from you…
