Ever feel like you’re doing all the right things in marketing but getting zero results? You’re posting, emailing, maybe even running ads – but nothing’s sticking.

The truth is, marketing isn’t just about doing stuff

It’s about doing the right stuff in a strategic, measurable way. If your marketing isn’t working, chances are you’re making one (or more) of these common mistakes.

1. You Have No Strategy

Marketing without a strategy is like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks. And let’s be honest – most of it won’t.

A solid strategy gives your marketing direction. It ensures everything you do has a purpose, a goal, and a way to measure success. Without one, you’re just creating content, running campaigns, and spending money with no real plan for how it all fits together.

To fix this, start by defining your goals. Are you trying to get leads, increase sales, or grow brand awareness? Be specific about what success looks like and set measurable targets.

Next, understand your audience – who are you speaking to, and what do they care about? Conduct market research, build customer personas, and analyse their pain points.

Once you know your audience, choose the right channels. If they’re professionals, LinkedIn might be better than TikTok. If they’re visually driven, Instagram could be the way to go.

Consistency is key. Create a content and promotion plan so you’re not scrambling to come up with ideas at the last minute. Use analytics tools like Google Analytics or social media insights to track your performance. Set clear KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) like engagement rates, click-through rates, and conversions so you can measure success. And finally, be willing to adjust.

Marketing isn’t static – if something isn’t working, refine your approach.

2. You’re Not Tracking Your Data

If you’re not tracking your marketing performance, you have no idea what’s working and what’s wasting your time and money.

Imagine running ads, posting content, and sending emails without knowing which ones are driving results. You could be pouring effort into something that isn’t converting – while missing golden opportunities elsewhere.

Start by setting up analytics tools. Google Analytics, social media insights, and email marketing dashboards will show you what’s working. Pay attention to engagement rates, website traffic, lead generation, and conversion rates. Identify trends and patterns – which posts get the most interactions? What kind of emails drive the most clicks?

If something consistently underperforms, don’t be afraid to cut it. Instead, double down on what’s proving effective. Marketing is all about optimising. By tracking your data, you can make smarter, more profitable decisions rather than guessing what might work.

3. You’re Doing the Wrong Things

Not all marketing tactics work for all businesses. If you’re copying what someone else is doing without understanding why it works for them, you could be wasting your efforts on the wrong activities.

For example, posting daily on Instagram might not help if your audience is more active on LinkedIn. Blogging might be pointless if your ideal customers prefer short, snappy emails. Running Facebook ads might be a waste if most of your leads come from referrals.

Here’s a fun fact: 61% say generating traffic and leads is their biggest challenge. That’s often because they’re putting effort into the wrong places. I’ve advised a consulting client to start running Google Ads in the same week I was advising another client to stop – different things work for different businesses.

The fix? Audit your current marketing activities. Look at what’s actually bringing in leads and sales versus what’s just taking up time. Experiment with different approaches – don’t assume something won’t work until you’ve tested it.

Once you identify winning strategies, focus on refining and scaling them instead of chasing new trends that might not be effective for your business.

Successful marketing isn’t about doing everything – it’s about doing the right things consistently.

Stop Wasting Time, Start Making Money

If your marketing isn’t working, don’t assume it’s because marketing “doesn’t work.” More often than not, it’s because there’s no strategy, no data tracking, or you’re focused on the wrong things.

By fixing these three mistakes, you’ll turn your marketing from a frustrating guessing game into a results-driven machine. Ready to make your marketing work? Start with a plan, track your progress, and double down on what works.
